His announcement was a shock to members of his electorate and the wider community.
To celebrate his political career, here are 10 memorable moments with the sitting member.
1. His elevation to Deputy Premier
In October, 2014, Troy Grant was elected to the role of Nationals Leader and Deputy Premier. He had been in politics for three years. At the time Mr Grant told the media in a statement, that to be elected Nationals leader was an "extraordinary honour".
He said he felt "humbled" by the decision of his colleagues and would "work my backside off" in the role.
Mr Grant, a relatively inexperienced politician who was elected to the NSW Parliament only in 2011, said he held dear the principles of "honesty, integrity and hard work" and intended to pursue those in the job.
2. His demise from Nationals Party Leader/ Deputy Premier
Just over two years after his promotion, Troy Grant stood down from leader of the NSW Nationals.
“As a result of The Nationals candidate for Orange Scott Barrett facing an uphill battle to hold the seat, I have informed the NSW Nationals leadership team that at tomorrow’s Party Room meeting I will be standing down as Leader of the NSW Nationals,” Mr Grant said on November 14.
He had some fun moments in between.
The Deputy Premier gave insight to his average working day to The Daily Liberal.

5. That time he tried to ban Greyhound racing in NSW
Mr Grant had plans to decommission the greyhound industry he wrote this letter:
“BEING a leader is about making tough decisions that are ultimately for the greater good.
“Recently I had to make one of those tough decisions, and that was to support the end of greyhound racing in NSW by 1 July next year.
“The decision followed a Special Commission of Inquiry report that was over a year in the making to really get to the bottom of what’s wrong in the greyhound racing industry, following shocking allegations of live baiting - using live animals to train greyhounds – in the industry.
“Like many of you, I’ve enjoyed a day out and a punt at the dog track and simply banning things is not in my nature.
“However after reading the report and getting my head around the depth of animal cruelty in the industry I had no other choice.”
6. Subsequent death threats were made...actual death threats
Three men were charged after death threats were allegedly made to NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant over the state government's decision to ban greyhound racing.
It is alleged phone calls were made in the past seven days to Mr Grant's electorate office in Dubbo.
In the calls, threats were allegedly made against Mr Grant, who is also the racing and police minister, as well as his family and electoral staff.
7. THAT argument between mayor Ben Shields and Troy Grant
A bitter feud between Dubbo’s top politicos has boiled over, with Mayor Ben Shields saying State MP Troy Grant should retire.
Councillor Shields’ comments came after Mr Grant blasted him over an open letter sent to Dubbo Regional Council residents earlier this month.
In the letter, Cr Shields outlined his council’s achievements since amalgamation, including $98 million worth of capital infrastructure under construction.
But Mr Grant labelled the letter “disingenuous”, “belligerent”, “misleading” and “pathetic”, claiming all but one of the nine projects highlighted – The Dubbo Pool and Water Park – had “been funded by me, and during the time of the administrator”.
8. And just any moment Troy is turning a sod...he loves turning a sod.
