The reminder comes after two incidents have taken place in Narromine where police response and public safety have been compromised by not calling the correct number.
“In the event of an emergency call triple zero (000),” Sergeant Smith said.
“A crime occurring now is an emergency.”
“These lines are always manned, and it’s the best way to get in contact with an operator straight away and get the appropriate response.”
“One of the advantages of calling triple zero is you can stay on the line with an operator while police or emergency services are being dispatched,” he said.
To clear confusion being delivered in the community, Sergeant Smith said contacting the Police Assistance Line (131 444) is the number to report non-emergencies.
“This might be if you wake up in the morning and you see your car has been broken into and there’s nobody at the scene.”

Sergeant Smith said contacting the Police Assistance Line (131 444) has its place but it’s not a blanked one stop shop police number.
“Another number is Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000) or the Crime Stoppers website, which is to provide information of a crime you see, whether it’s a suspicious person or vehicle, or suspicious criminal activity that doesn’t require immediate police attendance,” he said.
Sergeant Smith is encouraging that the local Narromine police line 6889 1444 can also be used for local enquiries and reporting non-emergencies.
“Again much the same as Crime Stoppers if you want to provide information about something that’s not urgent or doesn’t require us to fly out the door contact the local station,” he said.
Sergeant Smith said he welcomes anyone with any questions or concerns to contact the station.
“If anyone's got any concerns contact me, come and see me, give the station a call and I'm happy to speak to them and address any concerns,” he said.
