Students, teachers, parents and community members took the time to appreciate the amazing array of scientific research projects on display from years 5-11 at Narromine Public, St Augustine’s Parish and Narromine High School.
Principal Mr Phil Rufus said it was great to see so many in attendance.

“We appreciate the support our Science Spectacular receives in the community, it really is an event which brings everyone together,” Mr Rufus said.
“As well as those here tonight a number of community members gave up their valuable time last week to help with the unenviable task of judging the boards,” he said.
Narromine Mayor Craig Davies was on hand to present the major awards.
“We appreciate Mayor Davies’ participation, both on the night and as a judge, and were proud to show him the outstanding work achieved by Narromine students as well as the great community support for our Science Spectacular,” Mr Rufus said.
The overall winner was Year 10 student Ella Geyer whose research entitled “This Board Sucks” examined the efficiency of plastic straws and their alternatives. The overall runner-up Elissa Simmons, also from Year 10, named her research “To Salinity and Beyond” and looked at the effect of salinity on the growth of plants.
The People’s Choice Awards are always hotly contested and Narromine Public students took out both the top and runner-up positions with Jock Chapman, Joshua Richards and Jaxon Stanford’s project “Boing, Boing, Bounce” narrowly defeating “Going the Distance” by Harry Irvine, Brodie Mackay and Jayden Hocroft. The Paper Plane Competition winner was Thomas Fidock with Fletcher Roll in second place.
There was plenty to keep the crowd entertained with a number of interactive displays and challenges to be mastered.
The Science Shop was a busy spot with a range of fun science products to be found.
“Narromine High would like to acknowledge Alkane Resources and Narromine Shire Council who, through the Tomingley Gold Project - Community Fund, have financially contributed to our Science Spectacular and also subsidised costs for those students going on to represent us at a regional level. The Community Fund has also enabled the purchase of a 3D printer and drone which will enhance our STEAM learning resources and form part of our technology hub,” Mr Rufus said.
The top students from each year are now eligible to take their research to the Illawarra Regional Science Fair to be held at the University of Wollongong in late November.
Students have done very well in previous years at this regional level, winning a number of awards, and given the high standard of this year’s boards that trend looks set to continue.

- Stage 5 Winner: Egg-celent Eggs; Joann Fidock
