Sporting groups and community members from across Western NSW will be invited to submit their nominations for inclusion into the Western Region Sporting Legends Drive and Honour board at the new Western Region Institute of Sport.

After securing $9.3 million for Stage One and complimenting the recent $4 million grant to the Dubbo PCYC which will be a key part of the $44.5 million world class facility a complimentary Legends Drive will be established honouring Sporting legends form the Western Region.
The project will be chaired by local Sports Historian ABC Western Plains/Central West Sports Saturday presenter Geoff Mann in conjunction with the Dubbo office of the Office of Sport, NSW Sport and Recreation.
“There are just so many locals who have achieved National and International representation and success in a wide variety of sport. We are keen to make sure we don’t miss anyone so we want to hear from Sporting groups and community and family members to nominate Legends for inclusion,” Mr Mann said.
Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said this is a great way to recognise many locals from across the Western region and that it seemed appropriate to showcase these names along the driveway of the new institute.
“You just think straight away of Australian Cricket legend born in Dubbo raised in Narromine, Glenn McGrath AM ICC Hall of Famer, Olympians like Phillip Dutton (Nyngan), Dan Noonan (Warren), Brian Tink (Dubbo) and of course, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor (Narromine),” Mr Grant said.
“Swimmers Peter Coughlan (Dubbo) and Dyana Calub (Bourke/Dubbo) both represented at Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Wallabies include Jon White (Wellington/Yeoval), Ollie Hall and Geoff Chapman (Dubbo), John Coolican ( Bourke), Dennis O’Callaghan (Nyngan) as well as Tom Robertson and Ned Hanigan (Coonamble) in the current crop,” Mr Mann added.
Mr Grant added, “League has plenty - Don Parish, Terry Fahey, Les Davidson, Dean Pay, David Peachey, Andrew Ryan, David Gillespie (Narromine), Nik Kosef (Cobar) Terry Fahey and Rambo Ronny Gibbs.”
“Shooters Phillip Adams (Forbes) and Bob Dowling (Dubbo) have outstanding records competing for Australia. Megan Dunn and Bob Spears are our highest achieving cyclists although there have been dozens of national and world junior reps. Andrew Taylor went to Open World Championships a couple of years ago.”
The design for the Legends Drive and Honour Boards will be determined once a list is complete. Given the large list of potential nominees strict criteria will be established to ensure the local success is honoured but that the status of the achievement also reflects the highest levels of achievement.
