Most of us live fairly humdrum lives. We get up. We go to work. We get back home. We go to bed. Repeat. Once in a while though, something extraordinary happens that makes us realise that we’re not zombies. We see that life is beautiful, and there are good things in the world.

Sometimes it can be a stunning scene in nature, or a piece of music, a work of art. Most of the time though it is interactions with people. Humans can be sometimes remarkably cruel, but also sometimes extraordinarily kind. Being created in the image of God, we have the capacity to destroy as well as create. Now and then, we may encounter fellow travellers on the road who remind us that we have value and are significant.
Bill Murray seems to be one such person. While the actor is more widely known for his body of work on the silver screen, he is also famous for unexpectedly “doing life” with total strangers. He has been known to read poetry to construction workers, taking over the driving of a taxi so the driver could practice his saxophone and doing the washing up in a student residence, the list is almost endless.
How amazing would it be for a distinguished and celebrated person to just walk into one’s life and live it with us for a while. Talking with us, sharing experiences, serving us, making a contribution to our day, and sharing a few hours together on the road.
The Bible reminds us that once upon a time a young couple (unknown) invited the Creator of the world to their wedding party (John 2:1-10). When the grog ran out, he bought the house a round (or two). So unexpected. Such a blessing. Everyone had a great time.
We are all created with the capacity to bless, to enrich the lives of those around us. We might think it is a small thing, but to those around it, it could make their day. Look for a way to bless someone around you today. All brickbats, bouquets and banter welcome at pastor@pmbc.org.au
