Year 11 students James Churchwood and Shakirra Bock-Kemp have been awarded the prestigious Victor Chang School Science Award for excellence in the field of science.

The pair from Trangie Central School are just two of 13 Year 11 students from the Western NSW region to receive the award.
Shakirra, according to her nomination demonstrates a “demonstrates a deep understanding, natural curiosity and appreciation for the natural and physical world” and is currently working towards going to university to study the medical sciences.

According to his nomination, James has “outstanding” problem solving and communication skills and has the determination to persevere with a problem until its conclusion.
Currently James is working on a solar panel project, where he is programming an Arduino computer to control a system that tracks the sun and measures the output from a set of solar panels.
School Principal Anne Holden said she was “very delighted” to have two students receive the award for their excellence in science.
“In the past we have achieved one winner, but this time we got them both … so we were really delighted,” Ms Holden said.
The award was named after the late cardiac surgeon and pioneer of modern heart transplantation Dr Victor Chang, and aims to celebrate young, gifted students and to foster growth in scientific studies and help raise community awareness and appreciation of the contribution science makes in our everyday lives.
