That’s the new incentive for children who get their hair cut at Sassy Styles hairdressing boutique in Trangie. 

Children can now get their hair cut, but at the same time earn three dollars for reading a book to their hairdresser. 

Owner of Sassy Styles Cassie Lewis said it is really a “win-win for everyone.”

“It’s a win for mum, they’re learning, the child gets three dollars and the child sits still for me,” Ms Lewis said. 

Ms Lewis said she wanted to do something different, that will motivate kids to learn. 

“Most of the kids that I have come in here, they’re here every five or six weeks so I just thought why not, I like to be different,” Ms Lewis said. 

“You see at a lot of other hairdressers they put an iPad or a computer in front of the kids, and I think that they get enough of that.”

“So a different incentive for them is to sit, read a book and I’ll give them three dollars if they read to me the whole time.”

“And then I think everyone’s happy.”

“They sit still, and I don’t cut off my fingers, or an ear.” 

Ms Lewis said as a mum herself, often a busy work schedule doesn’t leave a lot of time for every night reading with her children, and said this is a way to help other families out. 

“I just thought I’m a mum and I know reading’s really important, but sometimes I just don’t have time to do it every single night with them, so I thought why not do it this way.”

When asked why three dollars it’s simply what popped into her head. 

“I just picked three dollars out of my head,” Ms Lewis said.

“I think its enough for the kids to go ‘oh yeah that’s worth it’.”

Ms Lewis has collected books through the Trangie community Facebook page and is still looking for more children’s books suitable for ages 4 through to 13 years.

 Ms Lewis is encouraging children to tell their friends, come in, pick a book and sit down for a haircut.
