Each year emergency service crews put up the challenge to fill a helicopter with non-perishable food, which is donated to Foodbank NSW/ACT to distribute to Aussies who struggle to put food on the table at Christmas.

Narromine RFS captain George Peters said this year the local brigade is helping the Dubbo Fire Control Centre rise to the challenge to fill a chopper.

The local brigade first took part in the challenge last year, where they produced three boxes.

"We thought we will give it a crack and help some people out," captain Peters explained of their desire to participate in the challenge again.

Since the challenge began NSW RFS members have donated more than 40 tonnes of food.

This year as well as providing meals to make Christmas a bit brighter for many families, meals and hampers will also be provided to drought affected farmers and communities.

"I mean anything is a help ... at the end of the day for us, it's just the satisfaction that we've done a little bit to help," captain Peters said.

"We just hope it helps give people a bit of a Christmas."

Community members are being encouraged to donate any non-perishable items to drop off points in Narromine which include Narromine Coles, Narormine Hardware and Macquarie clothing.

All donations must be made before Wednesday, November 27.
