Alfred Thomas Hawkins joined Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) on December 15, 1919, in West Wyalong Station 499.
In 1927, Alfred moved his Family to Narromine, where he established an engineering business, that later became the Ford dealership in Derribong Street.
In September 1927 Alfred started a campaign to form a Fire Brigade in Narromine, writing to the then Board of Fire Commissioners of NSW.
Alfred received a response from Board of Fire Commissioners of NSW in October 1927.
Alfred kept up his campaign, writing to the then Narromine Municipal Council many times to gain their support.
After a tireless effort by Alfred and the construction of reticulating water mains, being laid in Narromine, on November 27, 1929, the first ever fire truck arrived in Narromine.
This truck was first kept at Alfred's engineering workshop in Derribong Street Narromine, until the current Fire Station 401 was built and opened in June 1932.
Alfred was appointed as the first captain, and engine keeper, with his responsibility to ensure the fire truck was ready to go 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In 1934, Alfred returned to England to study, and on August 1, 1934, Chris Woolfe was appointed as the new captain.
It was Alfred's son Cyril Hawkins who was appointed as the new engine keeper.
Cyril Hawkins joined FRNSW in West Wyalong as well in 1926. He joined Narromine Brigade in 1930, and served until 1947.
Robert Hawkins AFSM, son of Cyril, and grandson of Alfred, joined FRNSW in 1969, becoming captain in 1985, and retiring in 2009.
Robert was honoured in being awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal in 2010.
In 2010, Lucas Walsh, the grandson of Robert Hawkins, joined FRNSW in Narromine.
Lucas has recently been appointed as engine keeper.
Other Hawkins family members to serve FRNSW in Narromine include Bernard Hawkins from 1949 - 1950, and Montague Hawkins from 1938 - 1956.
Well known Narromine local Dot Maher is the Granddaughter of Alfred Hawkins.
