Emergency services, including four ambulance crews were called to the scene shortly before 10am Wednesday morning.
On arrival, emergency services found a silver Toyota Camry and an unladen table top truck had been involved in a crash in the westbound lane near the Falls Road intersection, approximately 15 kilometres from Dubbo.
The Toyota Camry suffered significant damage and Australian Community Media understands the top of the Camry was discovered 300 metres away from the stopped vehicle.
The 40-year-old driver of the car is in a stable condition but suffered a laceration on to her right hand and finger.
The 20-year-old female passenger of the car however is in a serious but stable condition suffering from a laceration to the back of her head. She is being observed for spinal precautions.
Both occupants of the car were taken to Dubbo hospital for observation.
The driver of the truck was assessed but suffered no serious injuries.
The eastbound lane was closed for a short time and has since reopened.
Western Region Traffic Tactician, Inspector Ben Macfarlane said the accident is a timely reminder for people to take caution on the road, particularly with the holiday season approaching.
"This Christmas holiday period, NSW Police will be focusing on drink and drug driving in all Western Region towns and villages, particularly back roads," he said.
"Speeding and fatigue management will also be a focus on regional roads for NSW Police."
He said that there would be a heavier police presence on the road to ensure everyone arrives and returns safely.
"If motorists choose to disobey the road rules, there is a better than average chance of being caught," he said.
"Police encourage motorists to drive to the conditions, plan your rest breaks, but more importantly stop whenever you feel drowsy."
