Hundreds of residents braced the 35 degree heat to take part in the festivities down at Dundas Park.

The day began at 8am with community groups offering barbecue breakfasts and coffee, with donations made going toward the bushfire crisis.

Children were entertained with Johnny Clarke's animal farm while Sing Australia and Jock Webb entertained the crowd with live music.

The official proceedings began at 9am with a welcome to country presented by chair of the Narromine Local Aboriginal Lands Council, Midnight Brydon and a raising of the flags.

After an official welcome by Narromine Shire mayor Craig Davies, six members of the community ofically became Australian Citizens.

Grainne Doolan, Rachel Lillyman, Piyushkumar Ramanlal Patel, Aarjav Piyushkumar Patel and Durgesh Swamy all took their pledges to become citizens in front of the community at Sunday's ceremony.

Narromine's Australia Day ambassador and one of Australia's biggest farmers and meat processors, Roger Fletcher addressed the crowd discussing Australia's greatness and the need for regional towns to work together.

The Australia Day awards were then presented to hard working and skilled members of the community.

After the official ceremony, children and adults took part in the annual watermelon eating contest.

This year Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders took on watermelon champion Anthony Everett, who was given a half melon handicap.

However no handicap was too hard for Mr Everett who once again regained his title.

Jan Colmer has been awarded Narromine's Australian Citizen of the year for her dedication and involvement within the community.

Ms Colmer arrived in Narromine 28 years ago and immediately became involved in the community, involving herself in many committees such as junior soccer, girl guides and senior cricket.

According to her citation she has maintained active roles in many of her parish church committees as well as the church diocese, while also being a much loved teacher at St Augustine's, and principal for 11 years. During this time she also oversaw many major upgrades for the school.

Ms Colmer has been an active member of Narromine Rotary for 16 years including 13 years as treasurer and very willing fund raiser.

In recent times she has played an instrumental role in administering Rotary's drought assistance program and was recognised with a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow award.

Shirley Allen was surprised when she was awarded Senior Citizen of the year at Narromine's Australia Day ceremony.

Mrs Allen arrived in Narromine in 1960 and since then she has been involved in a large number of community organisations.

Organisations she has contributed to include the Narromine Aviation museum, Country Women's Association, Pink Ladies, Narromine Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, St Vincent De Paul and the Narromine Craft Shop.

According to her citation Mrs Allen has a passion for Narromine that is reflected in the groups she has belonged to over the past 60 years.

"Over the past 60 years this passion infects others she meets causing a greater combined effort in discovering, understanding and delivering assistance to those in need within the Narromine community," the citation read.

"With a creative thought process, a fearless approach and a wisdom in patience, Shirley understands that a community is a family that shares experiences, and that these experiences are what builds a better and stronger community that collectively builds resilience when hardship is faced."

The Narromine Jets have been recognised for establishing a social touch football competition to help give back to the community.

The long-standing rugby league club began the competition at the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019 hosting the family friendly night for all ages and abilities at the Narromine Golf Club.

"The response to the new competition was overwhelming, not only from Jets members but from the wider community," the citation read.

The competition was so successful that it was decided it would run again for the 2019/2020 season.

Ms Edwards has been named Junior Sportsperson of the year for being a very dedicated young sportsperson, in particular shot put where she travels fortnightly to Newcastle to train with a specialised coach.

According to her citation Ms Edwards is an active member of the Narromine Little Athletics club, and has proven to be a positive role model for younger members often helping others achieve and the club advance.

All of Ms Edwards hard work was greatly rewarded when she and her parents attended the National Athletic championships in Perth on December 8 and 9.

At Nationals she placed third in shot put taking home a bronze medal.

Mr Newlands has been awarded senior sportsperson of the year as an upcoming talented sportsman.

During school Mr Newlands was a regular participant in many sports including rugby league, rugby union and little athletics holding several records.

In 2014 however Mr Newlands was the victim of a hit and run accident and spent several months in Westmead hospital.

Since the accident he has proven that hard work, dedication and a willingness to win pays off.

He has since then competed in a number of events including the 5 kilometre Stampede run, 5 kilometre Glow run, City to Surf, Orange 10 kilometre run, a half marathon stampede and Narromine Wetlands run.

According to his citation Mr Newlands is a valued member of the Narromine Jets rugby league club as a coach and committee member and regular touch football player.

It has been Australia's lost summer. Drought, hail, floods and, worst of all, bushfires have ravaged communities all over the nation.

But the selfless actions of friends, family, neighbours, strangers, local groups and volunteer organisations have inspired us and strengthened the bonds of community.
