Green top-scored in Australia's second innings of the SCG Test, with the only disappointment being that he fell 16 runs short a maiden Test ton.

The allrounder has improved his career-best score in every Test of this series, having debuted at Adelaide Oval.

Green's bowling and catching at gully, a position he'd never fielded much before playing for Australia, have also impressed coach Justin Langer and other good judges.

"Since he's come into Test cricket, it looks like he's almost born to play," Langer said.

"Looks like a really class act ... he's been great.

"He's fitting into the team well and he played beautifully. It'd be a relief for him to get his first 50.

"It would have been nice for him to get a few more and get his first Test hundred but he's a great guy to have around and doing a good job."

Green cracked four sixes and looked typically composed during Sunday's knock.

The West Australian is showing exactly why Greg Chappell described the 21-year-old as the best young Australian batting talent he has seen since Ricky Ponting.

"He was a bit defensive in the first innings and that's certainly not how he plays in first-class cricket. We just encouraged him to be a bit more positive, look to score a bit more," Langer said.

"A lot of people will talk about those sixes.

"But I just thought his whole innings - the way he was driving the ball down the ground, looking to push and hit ones - (was impressive)."

Green thanked captain and batting partner Tim Paine for boosting his confidence during Sunday's knock.

Meanwhile, Langer backed Nathan Lyon to spin Australia to a 2-1 series lead on Monday.

"I'm in awe of our bowling attack," Langer said.

"I'd be surprised if Nathan doesn't play a big part."
