St Vincent de Paul grants on offer for farmers, farm workers

Farmers and farm workers experiencing hardship from the drought are being encouraged to apply for grant funding.

St Vincent de Paul has $3000 grants to distribute through the federal government's Drought Community Support Initiative.

It's available for farmers, farm workers, contractors and suppliers.

Eligible local government areas include: Brewarrina, Cobar, Gilgandra, Mid-Western Regional, Narromine and Warrumbungle.

St Vincent de Paul's Peter Hargreaves said people shouldn't be embarrassed to reach out for help.

"The funding isn't going to go on forever. Don't drop the ball on this, just contact Vinnies and if Vinnies can help, they will," he said.

"The challenges of the drought aren't going to go away after one good season.

In addition to the drought grants from the federal government, Mr Hargreaves said Vinnies also has its own funding available for those experiencing hardship.

Those in the Forbes-Wilcannia diocese should contact Kelly Morgan on 6862 5758. In the Bathurst diocese Mr Hargreaves is the best contact on 0423 983 392.

Mr Hargreaves said help was also available by contacting the Rural Financial Counselling Service on 1800 940 404.

To be eligible for the Drought Community Support Initiative applicants need to be 18-years-old or older, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, living in an eligible local government area and impacted by drought.
