Home Safe Message from NSW Police Force:
Door Locks - Home security starts at your front door. Many burglaries occur because people fail to lock them before leaving the house even for a short period. If your home has a security screen door installed, keep it locked. A number of burglars enter homes through the garage. If there is access from the garage, ensure this door is locked when leaving the house.
Window Locks - Windows are also a key entry point for burglars. All windows throughout the house must be locked. Window locks are generally inexpensive and are designed for all window types. Windows leading into the garage also need to be locked. If window locks are key operated, don't leave the keys in the locks. Thieves break glass to unlock windows. Metal security grilles or shutters may be installed to restrict access to your home, however, caution should be exercised because if shutters are not properly installed they can trap occupants in an emergency such as a fire.
Security Lighting - Criminals don't like to be seen. Security lighting can be installed around the perimeter of your home, including over entry ways, along the driveway and the back of the house, revealing any possible hiding places for thieves. Regularly check and maintain any installed lighting. Consider using light timers to turn these on/off when not at home.
Home Alarm Systems - An intruder alarm can be used to enhance the security of your home. The system should be manufactured and installed to the Australian Standards for Domestic Applications. The system should be designed to provide maximum coverage of the home and garage.
Regularly check the battery and test the system.
If you have an alarm system, be sure to use it each time you leave home. Even with alarms, you should always lock doors and windows.
Is your house clearly numbered???
Please have a look at your house from the street and check if your house number is clearly visible, either on your letterbox or the house itself. Is the letterbox well positioned, not obstructed by shrubs, is the house number attached? If your street number is affixed to the front of the house, are the numbers clearly visible, are the numbers large enough, can you see it from the street?
Emergency Services responding to incidents rely heavily on the street numbers visible from a moving vehicle. Many residents have their street number painted on the gutter. This is ideal, however, over time the paint fades and becomes illegible. Please consider repainting yours if that's the case. Consider attaching reflective numbers on your letterbox and/or house - these are ideal as they are clearly visible from a moving Emergency Services vehicle that utilises a side/alley light to identify house numbers.
