The focus of the campaign was to encourage the wider community to plant more trees in order to improve the air we breathe, shade us from skin damage, create enjoyable spaces for health and recreation and reduce stress and above all, cool the environment.
It was an awesome promotion but it cannot stop there.
Now in 2014 there is a national campaign called 202020 Vision and the message is to make our urban areas 20 per cent greener by 2020. Greening the planet has to be an ongoing project where everybody participates and although the current campaign focuses on urban areas, you can do your bit in your own backyard very easily.
Annual activities such as the National Tree Day campaign, held in July each year, are a great way to encourage people to get planting however there is still much room for improvement, especially in urban communities.
The 'More Trees Please' focus is designed to promote the health and wellbeing benefits of trees to the community as a whole.
Although this promotion was launched three years ago it is never more relevant than in the summer when the temperatures soar and we are all looking for shade.
The gardeners of the world already understand that trees can transform the landscape and, on a personal level, that trees can help create places for recreation and enjoyment and assist our lives to be more peaceful and stress-free. Environmentally, trees filter air pollutants, provide oxygen, reduce energy consumption and who doesn't appreciate the serious cooling effects of a really fabulous tree?
Despite all of that many people do not take the time to think about the benefits of having trees and plants in their lives.
Unfortunately it is not until the temperatures soar into the high 30's and 40's that many look around for the shade of a tree and a lovely green lawn.
Incidentally the best selling plant in any nursery in the summer is a tree.
Although it is a bit late to be craving the shade of a tree at that point at least they have had the sudden realisation of how a tree could benefit their lives and that is a wonderful thing.
