Black spot addressed |POLL

The Narromine Shire Mayor, Craig Davies recently announced a roundabout for the crash-prone spot in the town. 

“The roundabout on the corner of Nymagee and Meryula Streets in Narromine is to go ahead” said Cr Davies.

“It had previously been announced that ‘Black Spot’ funding of $275,000 to address sites where road crashes are occurring, had been secured for the site. 

“Acting on the concerns of the community, [the] council sought further advice from the Roads and Maritime Services on the project,” he added.

RMS identify sites eligible for this type of funding based on accident data and then recommend a solution, through a cost benefit model.

Vehicles per day at this intersection have been measured at approximately 1162, with three eligible crashes occurring since 2009.

The council has been advised that the type of crash entered into their model best determines the treatment that would offer the greatest benefit.

In the case of this intersection, “T–bone” crashes have occurred and a roundabout was determined as the best treatment.

The council has obtained full funding for the installation of a single lane roundabout. Under the terms of the grant funding, all physical works are to be completed by 30 April 2017 deadline.

“[The] council would be placed in a precarious position if it rejected the funding and not adopted the recommended solution, particularly if there were further serious incidents at the intersection” Cr Davies said.

Cr Davies continued:  “[The] council is fortunate to have received the funding and I am confident that the roundabout will provide a safer alternative which should considerably assist the flow of traffic for this very busy intersection of town.”
