Narromine Police Sergeant Michael Smith said Australia Day is about coming together as a community to celebrate everything that’s great about being Australian, however he is reminding the community to act responsibly.
“I understand and respect that Australia Day means a number of different things to people in the Narromine community, and that people will spend the day marking the occasion in their own ways,” Sergeant Smith said.
“Police will be attending the community events at Narromine and Trangie and encourage others to come along and participate in the activities on offer.”
NSW Police are encouraging anyone who is planning on having a drink this Australia day to plan ahead and remember the coveted national culture of ‘mateship’ – look after your mates and drink in moderation.
“I urge people to act responsibly, especially if consuming alcohol,” Sergeant Smith said.
“Police are not here to stop people from enjoying themselves, but there will be a strong focus on anti-social behaviour and will not tolerate any dangerous, violent or anti-social behaviour.”
Operation Safe Return will also take place between January 25 and January 28.
The operation will see an increased police presence on the roads across the region.
“This operation is aimed at heightening public awareness to the dangers of excessive or inappropriate speed, alcohol and drug driving, fatigue, non-wearing of occupant restraints and helmets and distractions such as mobile phones,” Sergeant Smith said.
Double demerit points will be in effect for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences from midnight January 25 until 11.59pm January 28.
