FIREFIGHTERS might have been battling the 263 hectare bushfire burning in the Goonoo Forest since Tuesday morning, but it is yet to be brought under control.

Hot and dry conditions have helped fuel the blaze and create spot fires, while the wattle vegetation being burnt contains high oil levels which is creating dark columns of smoke.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Inspector Ben Shepherd said at 4.30pm on Wednesday the fire was at advice level and was 'being controlled'.

"There have been a number of spot fires this afternoon [Wednesday], but the crews have been able to contain them quite quickly," he said. "The large air tanker is being used to lay down some retardant lines [to help contain the blaze]."

There are 35 firefighters on scene, along with five aerial appliances.

Inspector Shepherd said while the dark smoke, which is visible from some distance away, has left some residents concerned the fire is burning well within the forest and not near any properties.

Mendooran Road, between Mogriguy Road and Castlereagh Highway, is closed in both directions.

The bushfire is currently burning within the areas between Mendooran, Frost, Frazers and Garlings roads.
