Narromine sporting news | Good field for final summer competition

There was a good field for the final summer Saturday comp of the season.Nine men and eight ladies faced the starter for this event.

During the winter the ladies re-join their weekly Saturday the comp.

Many thanks to the ladies who have supported the summer comp over the past six months.

Of the eight ladies who played last week Bev Woods was the runaway winner on 25 points from a three way tie for second.

The count back was used to decide second place which went to Vicki Gainsford from Jeanette Redden, and Ann Harmer all three on 21 points.There was no winner in the ladies NTP.

In the mens event Mal Richardson returned to the winners circle with a great round of 28 points.

Watch out Mal a we all saw what happened to last weeks winner when the handicapper got to him.Runner up was Bob Fletcher on 25.

Third prize went to Malcolm Fraser and for this he and the third place lady won a bonus mystery prize,( a small pack of cut up newspaper on a string to remind us of the old days.).

There was no NTP for the men this week.

Winner of the overall NAGA prize for the week was Terry Willis "Oh how the mighty have fallen".

He did not go home empty handed as he, along with Carole McDonald won the lucky number draws for the final week.

In the pool comp, the preliminary match was between Chris Harding and Ross King against Gus Smith and Bob Fletche.

This resulted in a win for King and Harding and they advanced to the final where they played Terry Willis and Mal Richardson.

It appeared as though Richo was in for the double when out of the blue he faltered and went in of the black giving Harding and King the title of Pool Champs for the week.Good to see "Pom" stayed for the distance this week.

The next nine hole comp for the Gerries will not be played until Wednesday, April 1 with the hit off 2.30pm of the first Tee.

Due to social distancing measures, Friday's PCYC boxing program will be cancelled until further notice.

A further direction has been issued today from NSWRL that commencement of competitions has been delayed until at least May 1, 2020. Training and trial matches remain cancelled.

We will continue to provide updated information as it comes to hand to us, so please bear with us as we navigate these uncertain times.

Owners, in general, were unable to be trackside at the Orange meeting on Sunday due to the crowd restrictions brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic, however some of the connections of Happy Partner, Gobelin and Vaquero were there to cheer them home from the grandstand.

Licensed persons with direct involvement with runners at the meeting were permitted to attend and there was plenty of excitement when Happy Partner won the the feature event the 1600 metres Buckley's Carpet Court Orange Gold Cup Prelude.

Sharon Jeffries from Parkes is the trainer and part owner of Happy Partner, her daughter Tiffany Jeffries was the jockey and Tiffany's husband Alex Proust was the strapper while his father in law Dale Jeffries is the stable foreman and trackwork rider.

A $31 outsider, Happy Partner steadily made ground to be ready to challenge when heads turned for home and after reaching the lead responded to strong riding from Tiffany Jeffries to win by a head from Athena's Voice ( Tony Cavallo, $4.60 ) with the $2.80 favourite Also Cool ( Mathew Cahill ) finishing third.

Nathan Smith as a part owner of Vaquero was also present as he is the licensed strapper for the horse which is trained at Orange by his wife Alison Smith.

Given a good run behind the leaders by Tony Cavallo, Vaquero ( $26 ) wore down Larynx ( Brandon Griffiths, $9 ) to win by a head with Indiana Wolf ( Tiffany Jeffries, $41 ) a fast finishing third in the 1400 metres Towac Legends Class 2 Handicap.

Mathew Cahill, fresh from his Albury Cup win on $41 outsider Spunlago during the week, won the Central West Trailers Maiden Plate ( 1000 metres ) at Orange on Gobelin which is trained at Cowra by his sister Kathryn Cahill who is also a part owner with her mother, Margaret Cahill.

Gobelin( $4.80 ) after a good battle in the straight edged past the $1.60 favourite Little Jerry ( James Innes Jnr. ) to score by a short neck with a length to third placed Alpine Royal ( Rasit Yetimova, $41 ).

Next meeting scheduled at Towac Park is the Orange Gold Cup on Friday, April 17.

Meanwhile meetings this week are scheduled for Narromine on Thursday and Warren on Saturday.
