The inspections are expected to continue for three weeks.
To ensure the safety of divers, it is necessary that the water level in the reservoirs be reduced to 18 metres, aproximately 75 per cent, which may decrease water pressure in some areas.
Narromine Shire Council general manager Jane Redden said these works were part their proactive maintenance programs.
"The cleaning process includes comprehensive reservoir cleaning and condition assessments, followed by a mains reticulation flushing process to remove impurities from the reticulation system," she said.
"There is a possibility that this process could effect residents through a reduction in water pressure, aerated water and slight water discolouration.
The scheduled works will assist in improving the water quality in both Narromine and Trangie for the future.
