Despite recent scenes of empty shelves of toilet paper in the local supermarkets, acts of kindness are becoming more common as people reach out to help the elderly and others in need.

The community driven initiative began late last month with calls to local residents to volunteer some time to help those in the shire most vulnerable and struggling during this time.

The Facebook group 'Viral Kindness Trangie and Narromine' was established in late March and has had over 45 responses of people eagerly offering their time.

Narromine Shire mayor Craig Davies said he was proud of the initiative and highlighted the good nature of small towns.

"To me it just highlights what a wonderful community we've got," he said.

"There's been so many volunteers that have jumped on board, so very readily, because they want to be able to help people in what is a very anxious and worrying time for them."

Cr Davies said that he is currently partnered with three people and was readily available weather they needed supplies, to post mail or just for a chat over the phone while isolated at home.

"Volunteers are allocated to elderly people or people who just need a hand during this coronavirus period," he said.

"So the volunteers will do minor tasks on a non-contact basis.

"If they need something up the street, or they need a little bit of help doing something, but it's on the basis that there's no physical contact."

He said this was to provide confidence and assurance to people that help is only a phone call away.

"It's just a wonderful way to build that sense of community and caring that our shire is renown for," Cr Davies said.

While there had been one confirmed case in the Narromine Shire, Cr Davies said the stable figure demonstrated that people in the shire had been doing the right thing.

"We've had one incident in the shire and that's it, there's been no local transmission," he said.

"We are, probably more so than the city, practising social distancing and behaving in a very sensible manner in relation to all of this, and that shows well for the future and all residents of the shire.
