It’s all about the beaches along the Mid North Coast that extends from Port Stephens, north of Sydney to Woolgoolga – know to locals as Woopi.

The main towns include Forster, Tuncurry, Wingham, Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, South West Rocks, Macksville, Nambucca Heads, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour.

At Port Stephens attractions include dolphin spotting, fishing, the Stockton Sand Dunes and scenic Tomaree Headland.

The Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre is home to the Wadjar Regional Aboriginal Art Gallery and the Yarrawarra Bush Tucker Cafe at Corindi Beach, midway between Coffs Harbour and Grafton.

Join a bush-medicine tour or a traditional art class and try some native bush tucker in the cafe.

Booti Booti National Park to the north of Forster-Tuncurry, stretches along a thin peninsula.

It is home to 654 species of native plants and 210 species of bird.  Tackle the step 400 plus steps to the viewing tower and you will be rewarded.

Stay

A 30-minute drive from Newcastle you will find The Anchorage at Port Stephens with Hampton style guesthouses looking towards Corrie Island National Reserve. Banisters in Port Stephens offers up market accommodation with coastal views and pool.

Woolgoolga has camping and caravanning in beachside holiday parks, beach houses, B&Bs and motels. The Woolgoolga RSL Golf Club features an 18-hole course.

Bellingen with its arty vibes has good camping, rentals, lodges and guesthouses. Cottonwood Cottage and North Farm are suggested.

There’s nothing like good fish and chips and Bub’s Fish and Chip at Port Stephens is finger licking good.

Murray Craft Brewery offers a wide range of boutique beer.

At Woolgoolga try Anchor Restaurant and for fish and chips, Seasalt Woopi. The Woopi Village Farmer’s Market showcasing fresh local produce is on every Friday offering bread, eggs, pasta, salami, fresh flowers, jams, chutney and honey.

For dining at Bellingen try Black Bear Cafe, the Old Butter Factory and No 5 Church.
