Melbourne Airport has been named the best airport in the country for the third year running despite it having no train service.

The Victorian airport beat long-term rival Sydney in a competition that is becoming more important as Aussies travel the world in record numbers.

Melbourne Airport was named Best Airport in Australia & Pacific by travellers in the Skytrax World Airport Awards overnight.

But it wasn't the only Aussie airport that came away with one of the prestigious gongs.

Adelaide Airport was named the Cleanest Airport, as well as the Best Regional Airport in Australia & Pacific.

Brisbane took away the award for Best Airport Staff in Australia & Pacific, while its Pullman Brisbane Airport hotel won Best Airport Hotel.

Sydney Airport, which is forecasting 2.5 million passengers during the Easter school holiday period, didn't win any awards.

Melbourne Airport, which is expecting over two million passengers this Easter holidays, is Australia's only 24-hour airport, while Sydney's airport has a curfew between 11pm and 6am.

Melbourne is mid-way through a $3 billion project to build an additional runway and expand its international terminal to accommodate more than 76 million domestic and international passengers by 2042.

There are also plans underway to build the Melbourne Airport Rail to connect the airport to Victoria's regional and metropolitan train network for the first time.

But Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the award went to the airport's "people".

"Every journey starts or ends with our people and from our customer-facing staff who embody Melbourne's renowned friendliness, to those who work behind the scenes to ensure the seamless operation of Australia's busiest 24/7 airport, this award celebrates the efforts of the 18,000 people employed at Melbourne Airport," Ms Argus said.

"Melbourne Airport has been busy investing in major upgrades, including new retail, food and beverage outlets; security screening refurbishments and upgrading baggage systems and airfield infrastructure."

The Best Airport in the World went to Singapore Changi, inching out Hamad Doha which took the number-one place last year. Third place went to Tokyo Haneda.

Changi Airport has won best airport in the world by Skytrax 13 times. This year it also won World's Best Airport Dining, the World's Best Airport Washrooms (the first time this award has been bestowed) and the Best Airport in Asia.

My all-time favourite destination is ... Cornwall. From the giant seagulls to the blustery beaches, Cornish pasties and fishing villages, it stirs something romantic and seafaring in me.

Next on my bucket list is … Mongolia. I want to go somewhere really unique that feels totally foreign and challenges my way of life.

My top travel tip is … Don’t plan too much. Walk the streets and let it happen. And make sure you check out what’s within a few blocks of your hotel - sometimes the best local food is found that way.
