Nearly 40,000 Australians killed during the Second World War have been honoured with a new coin, marking 80 years since the end of the deadly conflict.

The Royal Australian Mint has released the $2 coin design as a "lasting tribute to [the] courage and resilience" of Australian soldiers.
The design features a wreath of eight red poppies, each flower representing a decade since the end of the war.
A flowing purple ribbon was woven through the design to represent mourning, dignity and reflection, the mint said.
Royal Australian Mint acting Chief Executive Officer Emily Martin said the coin was "a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who served".
"For eighty years, the legacy of nearly one million Australians who served - and the almost 40,000 who gave their lives - has been part of our national story," she said.
"Through this coin, the Mint continues its role in telling that story, inviting reflection on the freedoms and values they fought to protect, and ensuring that their sacrifice is never forgotten."
Limited edition coins for collectors
The commemorative coin enters circulation in Australia in November, and collectors are able to buy a limited edition coin for their set.
A coloured fine silver proof was selling for $90, and a coloured uncirculated coin in a card was $22.50.
Collectors are able to enter a ballot from November 3 to 5, and the limited edition coins were available for sale through the Mint Shop from November 6.
