Narromine's Kelsey Neve donates hair to Alopecia Foundation

The year 6 student at St Augustine's Parish, whose hair was 36 centimetres long, cut her locks to be donated to the Alopecia Foundation, to make wigs for kids.

Family and friends gathered at the Royal Hotel in Narromine on Saturday as local hairdresser Tori Newlands from Mirror Hair Lounge volunteered to cut Kelsey's hair.

Kelsey said she had always wanted to cut her hair, and after seeing an advertisement on television, thought she would do it "for a good reason".

"So we got onto the internet and then we looked up a couple [of charities], and there were heaps on there," she said.

"With Alopecia, anyone can get it at any age, but there are a lot of kids that have it, and well, I'm a kid, so I wanted to cut my hair to make a wig."

Kelsey said it was when her mother showed her a video on the Alopecia foundation Facebook page, that inspired her to donate.

"I wanted to do it after seeing the video, there was this girl who was getting a wig and it was like she'd just won the lotto," she said.

"She was just so excited to go and get it cut at the hair dressers, and it just lit up her face, it was really nice."

Alopecia is an autoimmune condition which causes hair loss to the scalp and body. It can affect anyone of any race, gender or age, though it most commonly presents during early childhood.

Currently there is no cure or treatment.

The Austalian Alopecia Areata Foundation was established in 2010 to provide support for individuals and families living with the condition.

With the help of her school, St Augustine's Parish hosted a 'crazy hair' day raising $273 for the foundation last Friday.

Narromine's Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts System also hosted an out of uniform day raising $76 for the cause.

Kelsey said she challenged the school if they could raise $250, five teachers would then have their hair made crazy by the year 6 students.

"We got to $273, which knocked it out of the park and we got to do it," she said.

When asked if she was nervous about getting the chop, Kelsey said she was "eager".

"Not really, I was just eager to get it over and done with, because I've been waiting for so long to do it," she said.

"We were at the pub [on Saturday] and I thought 'come on 5pm, come around', and I was waiting for it to come around and all my friends got to cut a plait."

Kelsey said she's enjoying her new cut.

"It's very light, its a lot easier to wash," she said.

"I don't think I'm going to let my hair grow long again, it's just so easy."
